Basic Ear Warmers
A KNITTING Pattern by Liz Chandler @PurlsAndPixels
Use this Basic Ear Warmer Knitting pattern to make your own seamless headbands. After you have learned to knit, purl, work in the round, and switch needle sizes, you can knit these basic ear warmers. Adding a smooth stockinette center to your knit-purl-rib borders creates a classic knit look. With open tops, these headbands are perfect to wear with your hair in a ponytail or bun.
Choose double point needles, short circulars, or long circulars, and follow the instructions to knit in the round in your favorite method. Between the ribbed and smooth sections of this pattern, you will practice switching needle sizes. Then, you will bind off in the round to finish out your seamless headband.
With this pattern download, you will receive instructions for Preemie, Baby, Toddler, Child, Adult, and Adult XL sizes.
How these Simple Ear Warmers are Made
This pattern can be knit in the round in three different ways. Instructions are included for double point needles, the magic loop, and shorter circular needles. Pick your favorite method to knit in the round, then follow the instructions that match your chosen needles. Rather than binding off loosely, this pattern will have you bind off with a larger size needle to help ensure a smooth, even edge.
When you are finished, it can be fun to embellish these simple headbands with buttons, bows, or flowers.
Make these basic ear warmers with Caron Simply Soft Yarn, a very soft acrylic yarn. Or, you can substitute almost any worsted weight yarn in this pattern successfully; just check your gauge before you start. I’ve found that Malabrigo Rios, a merino wool yarn, makes an excellent substitute yarn for this pattern.
This is a beginner to intermediate knitting skill level pattern that requires a general understanding of knitting in the round, knit stitches, purl stitches, switching needle sizes, and a standard bind off.
