How these Single-Row Striped Scarves are Made
This scarf is knit flat using simple garter stitch, which means you knit every row with no purling required. The color changes happen every row, but there is no need to cut the yarn. Instead, you will slide your work to the other end of your circular needles and switch yarns, keeping both attached throughout. This method leaves only four tails to deal with: two at the beginning and two at the end.
The pattern includes instructions for three scarf widths: standard, wide, and narrow. Choose your preferred width, cast on the recommended number of stitches, and knit until the scarf is as long as you like. Most land around six feet, but you can make yours longer or shorter to suit your needs. This project is a great introduction to working with two yarns and is relaxing enough for experienced knitters too.
Materials
I designed these striped scarves with two solid colors of Caron Simply Soft Yarn, and circular needles. Try making it even more unique by swapping in a multicolored yarn.
You can substitute almost any worsted weight yarn in this pattern successfully; just check your gauge before you start. I’ve found that Malabrigo Rios, a merino wool yarn, makes an excellent substitute yarn for this pattern.
Skills
This is a beginner to intermediate knitting skill level pattern that requires a general understanding of casting on, making knit stitches, turning your work, andย binding off. You can weave in your loose ends or tie them into your work to finish your project.
Size Notes
- Extra-Wide size measures 9 inches by 6 feet (or your desired length).
- Standard size measures 7 inches by 6 feet (or your desired length).
- Narrow size measures 5 inches by 6 feet (or your desired length).
Care
If you use the materials suggested in this pattern, your final product will be machine washable. To keep your scarves looking their best, hand wash or machine wash separately on delicate cycle in cold water. You may tumble dry on low heat, but laying flat to dry is recommended.
