This hat is knit in the round from the brim up using 1 × 1 ribbing – one knit, one purl, all the way around. That’s what gives it its stretch and structure, so it grips the head just right without being too tight or too loose.

When you get close to the top, a few rounds of simple decreases shape the crown into a smooth finish. No fancy stitchwork, just a straightforward hat that looks good, feels good, and gets worn.

Materials

I designed the Chunky Ribbed Knit Hat using Hometown by Lion Brand Yarn.  You can substitute almost any super-bulky weight yarn in this pattern successfully; just check your gauge before you start. For example, I used Wool Ease Thick & Quick by Lion Brand Yarn to make the pastel hat below.  Malabrigo Rasta works well, too.

Skills

This is an easy knitting skill level pattern that requires a general understanding of knitting in the round, the long-tail cast on, knit, purl,  k2tog decrease, and finishing knit hats. If you are not familiar with these skills, find quick, free lessons in my Learn to Knit Guide.

Care

If you use the materials called for in the pattern, your final product will be machine washable. To keep your hat looking its best, hand wash or machine wash separately on delicate cycle in cold water. You may tumble dry on low heat or lay flat to dry.
