Rice Stitch Blankets
A Knitting Pattern by Liz Chandler @PurlsAndPixels

How these Rice Stitch Blankets are Made
This knitting pattern includes instructions for two blanket sizes (baby and Afghan), each written in two stitch styles: rice stitch and broken rib. Both create a cozy, subtly textured fabricโperfect for gifting or curling up with on the couch.
-
Rice Stitch uses knits, purls, and knit through the back loop (ktbl) for a beautifully textured, almost woven look. This version creates a dense, springy fabric with added depth.
- Broken Rib Stitch is a bit simpler and doesnโt require ktbl stitches. It creates a similar texture with a slightly lighter feel – perfect for beginner-to-intermediate knitters easing into texture work.
Both versions include slipped stitch edges, which help reduce curling and give a clean, finished look.
This blanket looks great in both solid and variegated yarns. Try soft acrylic for a lightweight throw, or use wool for a warm and squishy winter-ready piece.
Materials
I designed the Rice Stitch Blankets using Caron Simply Soft yarn in solid colors. Try their variegated “Paints” yarn line to spice things up.ย Or, you can substitute almost any worsted weight yarn in this pattern successfully; just check your gauge before you start.
Skills
This is an intermediate knitting skill level pattern that requires a general understanding of casting on, turning your work, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, knitting thru the back loop (optional),ย binding off, and weaving in loose ends.
