Description
Ribbed Knit Hat
A Knitting Pattern by Liz Chandler @PurlsAndPixels
If you want a project that pulls its weight, this ribbed knit hat will do the trick. Inspired by traditional fisherman beanies, this unisex pattern makes a stretchy, fold-over brim hat that fits most teens and adults without fuss. It is warm, wearable, and just the right mix of comfortable fit and classic look.
You will work in the round from the bottom up, using simple knit and purl stitches to create thick ribbing that holds its shape and keeps the cold out. The crown comes together with a few clean decreases that round off the top without overcomplicating things.
This printable PDF is the same ribbed hat pattern I offer free on the blog, just without the pop-ups or noise. Save it to your device or print it out so you can tuck it in your project bag and knit offline, fireside, or cozied up in your favorite spot.
Written with real-life knitters in mind, this pattern includes clear, row-by-row directions, yarn tips, and guidance for using circular needles and DPNs. Whether you’re knitting your first hat or just need something fast, warm, and not too intricate, this oneโs ready when you are.

This hat is knit in the round from the brim up using 1 ร 1 ribbing – one knit, one purl, all the way around. Thatโs what gives it its stretch and structure, so it grips the head just right without being too tight or too loose. No brim shaping needed; just fold it up or wear it slouchy, your call.
When you get close to the top, a few rounds of simple decreases shape the crown into a smooth finish. You will start on circular needles and switch to double-pointed needles or the magic loop when things get too tight to turn. No fancy stitchwork, just a straightforward hat that looks good, feels good, and gets worn.
Materials
I designed the Ribbed Knit Hat using Caron Simply Soft yarn in solid colors. Try theirย variegated โPaintsโ yarn lineย to spice things up.ย Or, you can substitute almost any worsted weight yarn in this pattern successfully; justย check your gauge before you start. For example, I used Malabrigo Rios, a merino wool yarn, in their color “Lotus” to make the purple hat below.
Skills
This is an easy knitting skill level pattern that requires a general understanding of the long-tail cast on,ย knit,ย purl, ย slip, slip, knit decrease, andย finishing knit hats. If you are not familiar with these skills, find quick, free lessons in myย Learn to Knit Guide.
Care
If you use the materials called for in the pattern, your final product will be machine washable. To keep your hat looking its best, hand wash or machine wash separately on delicate cycle in cold water. You may tumble dry on low heat or lay flat to dry.
