I designed this chunky crochet earflap hat to keep my little one’s head warm for a cold Colorado winter. I made it super thick so that it would be extra warm and toasty on those chilly days. It is is made with very, very soft acrylic yarn; I wanted to be sure it could be tossed in the washing machine after the boy inevitably got his hat all grubby playing in the snow.
This do-it-yourself (DIY) pattern shows you how to create your own crochet earflap hats in adult, child, baby, and infant sizes. Make one for everybody in the family!
This is an easy to intermediate level pattern, which requires both crochet in the round and flat crochet. I love this crochet earflap hat pattern because it works up very quickly using multiple strands of worsted weight yarn at the same time. Plus, the multiple strand crocheting makes the hat very thick, chunky, and warm.
The hats are reversible. Wear yours with the smooth crochet finish on the outside, or flip it inside-out to show off the ring pattern.
If you use the extra-soft acrylic yarn called for in the crochet pattern, the earflap hat can be machine washed separately on hand-wash cycle in cold water. Lay flat to dry.
The Yarn
My pattern calls for Caron Simply Soft Acrylic Yarn in any colors you choose. But, if you don’t want to use Simply Soft, any worsted weight yarn should work for this pattern (just check your gauge).
I always pick Caron Simply Soft Yarn any time a very soft yarn is practical, so that is what I selected when writing this pattern. I love this yarn because it is acrylic (no allergies), machine washable, and oh so very soft.
Do remember: Velcro will snag anything you make with Simply Soft Yarn, so make sure to keep them separate. I learned this the hard way when one of the baby’s bibs got stuck to a blanket made of this yarn and snagged it.
Don’t feel like making it yourself? That’s ok! You can order this hat in all sizes, handmade by me at my Etsy store. You can choose from a variety of custom colors for adult, child, baby, and infant sizes.
